sleeping alone

Sleeping alone
Donna sleeps alone
Donna has a home
Pia sleeps alone
she’s glad that I am gone
cause she no longer has to hide
what if I had known
Ana sleeps alone
little Ana sleeps alone
mom and dad are busy drinking
so Ana sleeps alone
If only I could sleep alone
could sleep at home
all by my own
with one who dreams
for Heaven’s sake
while I’m awake with you
Rita sleeps alone
her husbands have all passed away
and she’s left with Rita-syndrome
Ella sleeps alone
Ella sleeps in sudden bursts
woken by the phone
woken by the calls she makes
while no one’s home
Clara sleeps alone
she sobs herself to sleep at night
I hear her weep at night
I take her in my arms at night
Yes, Clara’s allright

not from here
02:24
|
|||
don't know my name nor where i’m from
people just refer to me as tom
but they don’t know who’s there insides, and hides
i am from here you couldn’t tell
my mother was my father was as well
though i don’t speak the way you yell, oh well
my grandpa was just like you
he was a stranger too
but my grandma never knew, it’s true
i don’t belong here, i hear you say
— but one day i may
but i don’t want to have to betray - our way
i’m not from here but i’m your kin
it’s the first thing i have been
you let me out, and I let you in

vanilla rum ice cream
02:21
|
|||
socks, tie, pants, shoes, shirt, coat, hat, scarf, red wine, bread, cheese, olives, nuts and gin, please, smile, talk, dance, fuck, sleep, dream, wake up, coffee, bagel, egg and ham, subway down, traffic jam, noisy cars, stinky air, seeking peace at union square, pigeons, rats and cats and squirrels, baby boys and dogs and girls, spicy food, bitchy mood, needy, greedy, feeling lewd
you were right in never showing anyone what's out of sight
and i was right that we should never trust our judgment at night
the little prince already said you should never sign a deed with a rosebush-like kinda weed
the little princess said you should never go to bed with a baobab tree or with me
i like wine from a jam jar, vanilla rum ice cream, bare feet, rock'n'roll tonight with you
i like the rum at the dive bar, standing by the jukebox, starry-eyed, looking up a song for you

if I was a woman
03:15
|

If I was a woman
If I was a woman
I’d be miserable
I’d be the easiest catch
for any psychopathic narcissist latch
If I was a woman
I’d have a miserable life
I’ve even been told by a friend that
I’d likely be a beaten wife, so I figure that
If I was a woman
I’d need an awful lot of luck
But luckily I’m a guy
so, emotionally speaking, I manage to scrape by
If I was a woman
I’d fight with a velvet glove
Cause even as a guy
I’m so quick to trust and so quick to love, such that
If I was a woman
I’d be even more cynical now than I am
I would probably have served myself on a plate
to just any old parasite eager to mate
If I was a woman
I’d be pretty and smart, I’d be sexy at heart,
I’d be awesome and sensitive, loving, yet bashfully shy
But luckily I’m a guy
Well, if I was a woman, maybe I’d be more of a guy than I

fabulous stranger
03:19
|
|||
fabulous stranger's eyes sway across the train tracks
fabulous stranger's arms are hugging herself
fabulous stranger's teeth are nibbling at her lower lip as if she were to say: fabulous me
it's just a thought
i don't hear what i see
fabulous stranger's shoes remind me of the old days
fabulous stranger's hair so simple and fair
fabulous stranger's voice is blending in with ambient noise
like venus with the starts
mending day and night
night and day
far from me
my fabulous stranger walks slow across the platform
leaving behind a tale about people like me
a sign for me to run after her and say: you're fabulous to me
but i just stay
stay put and grab her book and take her place
turn the page
and maybe be the hero she's just been for me
